A few weeks ago, I shared about the book I’ve been reading called Breath.
One of the learning points I keep coming back to is regarding the most effective rhythm of breathing (and how it drastically impacts your health!).
Interestingly, this overlaps with the 5th principle in the GETUP strategy – Pray or Meditate for 5 Minutes/day.
In Breath, James Nestor discusses the best breathing rate for optimal health is 5.5 seconds inhalation, 5.5 seconds exhalation, which equates to 5.5 breaths per minute.
What he discovered in his research is this breath pattern is exactly the same as Tibetan monks prayer mantras and Catholic rosary prayers.
Here’s the exciting catch! It only takes five minutes per day of this breath work to make positive physiological changes inside your body. Yep – just FIVE minutes.
Caution… side effects of this type daily breathing may include, but are not limited to:
Reduced stress
Decreased blood pressure
Better digestion
Clearer thinking
Weight loss
Increased lung capacity
Increased oxygenation to your organs, muscles, tissues, and brain
