This morning the phone rang just as I was eating a strawberry.
Now this isn’t just ‘any’ strawberry.
This is the ONE strawberry my garden will produce this week. Once gone, I have to wait almost a week before another one is ripe.
We have two strawberry plants we’ve had for 4 years. And when we have a ripe strawberry – it’s literally A. Ripe. Strawberry. ONE. Not even enough for Brent and I to EACH have one. Just ONE. Ha!
Here’s what this has taught me (besides plant more strawberry plants)…
When I have ONE home grown, pesticide free, beautiful, plump, red strawberry to eat, I stop and savor every moment of eating that strawberry. As I slice the green tuft off and cut it in half (so there are two bites to savor!), I am fascinated by the depth of color. It’s red all the way through to the middle. The texture is firm, just ripe enough.
As I’m about to put the strawberry in my mouth, I stop.
I stop pacing around the kitchen.
I stop gazing out the window.
I turn all my attention to the tiny slice of homegrown heaven I’m about to enjoy.
I put the first piece into my mouth, I focus on the flavor burst – the sweetness of the strawberry, the sliver of tartness to balance the sweet. The seeds make it a little bit crunchy. It IS a slice of heaven, and I get to savor every single little moment of enjoyment.
You know what I’m going to ask you…
When was the last time you stopped, fully stopped, to savor the moment?
It could be a delicious fresh piece of summer fruit, an artisanal piece of chocolate, or just a conversation with another kind human in the store or the bank. These moments pop up in our daily lives more often than we realize, which means, we can choose to have more moments in life to savor. All we have to do is expand our awareness and be open to the opportunity.
Here’s to YOUR next moment to savor!
PS. Two weeks ago we planted 24 more strawberry plants in hopes to have an actual ‘harvest’!
