The Dirty Dozen

Earlier this month, we discussed that label you see on things at the grocery store “USDA Organic,” and what it really means. (If you missed this, check it out here.)

Today’s conversation is a follow up about what to always buy organic because they’re the most ‘toxic’ non-organic foods.  They’re known as The Dirty Dozen.

It can get spendy to buy everything organic, so I appreciate this list.  I can refer to it when shopping and eating out to avoid the dirtiest offenders.

 THE DIRTY DOZEN

  • Strawberries (and most other berries)

  • Spinach

  • Kale/Collard/Mustard Greens

  • Nectarines

  • Apples

  • Grapes

  • Cherries

  • Peaches

  • Pears

  • Bell & hot peppers

  • Celery

  • Tomatoes

On the flip side, there’s also The Clean Thirteen.  It’s a list of the least toxic non-organic foods, meaning you don’t have to go out of your way to purchase these organic.

THE CLEAN THIRTEEN

  • Avocados

  • Pineapple

  • Onion

  • Frozen Sweet Peas

  • Eggplant

  • Asparagus

  • Broccoli

  • Cabbage

  • Kiwi

  • Cauliflower

  • Mushrooms

  • Honeydew

  • Cantaloupe

Making healthy choices when grocery shopping can be challenging enough.  These lists help to clear up confusion and save some pennies.

If you want to take it to the next level, the restaurants you frequent may not buy any of their fruits or veggies organic.  Be bold and ask if their produce is organic before you order the Spinach Salad, or devour a bowl of chips & salsa (tomatoes & peppers).

As always, take one step at a time when making changes.  An easy first step is focus on the Dirty Dozen when grocery shopping because you’ll have healthier foods at home.  This will make a huge difference in your body’s health.

In closing, remember change is hard!  Be kind and loving to yourself as you make steps toward being healthier.  You deserve your kindness and your love.
