As I was leaving the house this morning, I walked outside and saw a Steller’s Jay standing in the middle of my driveway throwing around an earthworm. It was literally playing with it’s food!
The Jay looked at me, then picked up the earthworm, wiggled it around, and tossed it into the air again, only for the worm to fall back to the driveway. This playing went on for a 2-3 more tosses, while I stared from 15 feet away at the amazement of nature.
Finally, one last grab with its beak, a wiggle of the worm above its head, and then swiftly, the Jay sucked down the entire earthworm, looked at me, and flew off.
Yes, the early bird does get the worm. And here were my three take-aways from watching the Jay and the earthworm:
Getting what you want requires persistence.
You can have fun while doing it.
