Fish burps, anyone?
That’s absolutely the WORST part about taking vitamins.
And I don’t know about you, but if I’m going to suffer fish burps, it better be the right kind of nutrients for my body. Here’s what I mean…
Did you know there’s a distinct and critical difference between Omega-3’s, Omega-6’s, and Omega 9’s?
The reason I share this is because lots of “Fish Oil” supplements brag that you can get not only Omega-3’s but ALSO Omega 6’s and Omega 9’s! …eek…
So, without diving deep into biochemistry, the majority of people in our modern society are vastly deficient in Omega-3’s (O-3). These are the ones you get from cold water fish and give you fish burps. Omega-6’s and 9’s (O-6, O-9, respectively) come from grains and processed foods. Most people in our modern society have an abundance of these in their body.
The punchline:
Omega-3’s are ANTI-inflammatory.
Omega-6’s and Omega-9’s are PRO-inflammatory.
Why does this matter? Because an imbalance of Omega-3’s to Omega-6’s causes disease: physical disease and emotional disease. A healthy ratio of O-3 to O-6 is 1:1. The average American ratio is 1:24. Peer reviewed research states there’s a direct correlation between disease and a greater imbalance of this ratio. For example, depression is often seen in people with 1:40 ratio. Schizophrenia is seen in people with 1:80 ratio. These are physical and emotional responses to inflammatory conditions. There are more, but this is supposed to be ‘short’ – haha.
If you are taking fish oil supplements or Omega supplements – good! Now, go check the label.
If your Omega supplement touts it’s a 3-6-9 combo – you might want to throw it away because the positive anti-inflammatory effect of the 3’s is getting negated with the pro-inflammatory effect of the 6’s and 9’s. Bummer, I know. But, now you know so you can make a better selection next time.
There are some over-the-counter quality O-3 supplements, such as Nordic Naturals. However, highest quality O-3 supplements come from brands such as Standard Process and Metagenics, only sold by health care practitioners. And good news – some of the high quality O-3 supplements have NO fish taste!
