Do you ever look at your fingernails?
Not just the white tips that have grown out, but the part still attached to your finger, the nail plate. There is a lot you can learn about your health by looking a little longer.
Last week, we talked about microcirculation.
That’s where the microscopic magic happens inside our bodies. (If you missed it – check here.) It’s also where microscopic damage can happen, which can lead to bigger health problems.
The reason I bring up your fingernails is because you can use your fingernails to evaluate the health of your microcirculation.
Take a look at your fingernails, specifically the white “half moon” near the nail bed. This area is called the lunula. The size of the lunula is an indication of how good or poor your microcirculation is. The lunula on all your fingernails (and toenails!) should be large, indicating healthy microcirculation. If the lunula is small or missing, then your microcirculation is suffering.
The top two negative impacts to microcirculation are
Sugar
Lack of Omega-3’s
This short insight is quickly turning into a “series” because we still need to cover “Why do these make an impact?” and “How do I improve it?!”
So this week, evaluate your own fingernails and toenails and determine the current health of your microcirculation. Next week, we’ll dive deeper into the Why and How.
And remember, knowledge is power. Knowledge about yourself is self-empowerment. You deserve to be empowered!
With Love, Dr. Michelle
