Last week I was having a conversation with a co-worker about organic products. How they’re better for your health, more people are choosing Organic products, but how do you know what ‘organic’ labeling really means? I thought, “this is GREAT! I should totally share this in my blog!” So, I did some fact-checking – because I want you to have the most truth possible, of course! Lo and behold, I learned something new about the USDA Organic label.
I have known for a long time the USDA Organic label doesn’t mean the product is actually 100% organic. Shocked? Not me.
Over the years, I had “heard” the product only had to be 80% organic to receive the USDA stamp of ‘organic’ approval. However, I was shocked to learn it actually has to be 95% organic to have the USDA Organic label.
Here’s my resource, and it discusses what does and doesn’t qualify to be labeled organic. https://www.ams.usda.gov/rules-regulations/organic/labeling#4%20labels. If your next thought is like mine, GMO vs non-GMO products, check this link for your answer https://www.ams.usda.gov/publications/content/can-gmos-be-used-organic-products.
You’ve seen it on the shelves. Organic products are becoming more common, which is great because they are absolutely more healthy for your body. People are using their dollar to vote and its clear the market wants more organic products. But they can still be kind of pricy.
Keep an eye out for over the next few weeks, I’ll give you the scoop on the Dirty Dozen and the Clean Thirteen. This way you can be more selective about when to spend a bit more on Organic products and when you can skip organic and save some pennies.
Hopefully, you can now shop with a slight bit more confidence in the USDA Organic label, and I can too!
